I took this picture during my hike to Waipio Valley. It’s a short but steep walk down a paved road, turn right at the bottom of the hill and head down the dirt road which ends at the beach. The beach is a combination of round, black lava rock and soft black sand. It’s very beautiful, as you can see.
You can cross the river, like I did, and walk to the far side of the valley to a trail which zigzags up for some great views of the valley and the ocean.
When you cross the river, be careful because the current is pretty fast. The area where I crossed wasn’t too bad and it the water came up to my stomach. It’s worth it because on the other side of the river there are less people.
When I go back to the Big Island, I’m definitely going back to Waipio Valley. It’s so beautiful.
