Last week I finally took the time to hike the Eagle Creek trail out to Punchbowl Falls. This was one of the few Columbia River Gorge hikes that had eluded me. Despite the healthy downpour that is typical this time of year, it was a really beautiful hike. The trail is far too easy for my taste, you could easily take Grandma with you (if she’s not afraid of heights) but the scenery is worth the sacrifice.
Normally, you can take a trail down to the bottom of Punchbowl Falls and stand near the pool but the rain had swollen the river so much that I couldn’t safely get there. I definitely want to go back during the spring or summer. If we get snow this year, and if I’m not out on the road, I’m going to go back. I bet it’s lovely under a blanket of fresh snow.
How To Get There
Head East from Portland, Oregon on HWY 84. Take the Eagle Creek exit. It’s past Multnomah Falls but before the Bridge of Gods. From Vancouver, WA it took me about 45 minutes. Parking is $5.00 for the day.
