Perhaps the most recommended place to go snorkeling on the Big Island of Hawaii, is Captain Cook’s Monument.
What’s so special about this place?
The historic significance is that this is the place where Captain Cook was killed after an altercation with native Hawaiians. But it also has clear water, tons of coral, and you can usually spot spinner dolphins there. I missed out on the dolphins but everything else about it was cool.
It’s a relatively short drive south of Kailua-Kona and then a short hike through tall grass and rough volcanic rock. But it’s worth the effort to get there and costs you nothing, whereas tours can cost well over $50 per person. I’ll be writing a comprehensive post about the hike.
