Since I’d never been to any of the Civil War battlefields I thought that’d be a moving experience.
It really was.
It’s a strange feeling to know you’re walking somewhere thousands of people battled. Shooting. Screaming. Bleeding.
Civil War Battlefield: Manassas
Manassas National Battlefield Park was the site of two battles during the Civil War, simply named the First Battle of Manassas and the Second Battle of Manassas. They also go by the name Battle of Bull Run (first and second respectively).
People actually rode out in their carriages with picnics to watch the battle. Everyone seemed to think this one conflict would decide the entire war. Boy, were they wrong!
This house survived the battle. It did take some damage but nothing serious. Sometime after the battle, or the war, soldiers returned and built this monument out of brick and decorated it with artillery shells.
Be sure to visit the Henry Hill Visitor Center for great exhibits and a moving audio & diorama presentation about the battle.
Address: 6511 Sudley Road Manassas, VA 20109
